Four Roses distillery out of Lawernceburg Kentucky produces a solid selection of bourbons across a few price ranges, including a single barrel and a small batch, which is what we have today.
This was our Valentine’s day bottle, and yes, the review has come a little bit later than Valentine’s day, because sometimes life gets in the way. Without any further delay though, here is the Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon!
Some quick notes:
The Small batch bourbon is made from four barrels of bourbon, each with a different recipe. All are blended together, and then bottled at 45% ABV.
Color: Light clear golden pour on this bourbon.
Nose: A soft and inviting nose, some spices, dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel, and slight wood notes.
Palate: A sweet sip with some spices to it. The fruit that was very noticeable on the nose is not as apparent on the sip, but it is still there, with some oak, leather, spices and vanilla. The finish lingers for a while after the sip, leaving those pleasant sweet notes to stay in your mouth for a while after it’s gone.
Nose With Water: A softer nose, with the fruit jumping out more and the oak really growing as well.
Palate With Water: A softer sip on the palate as well one water is added, with the sweet flavors coming through a lot more, more of that vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar. The finish does not linger as long, and the spicy notes fade as well.
Rating:
A: 89/100
Z: 93/100
O: 91/100
This is a bourbon that we would recommend drinking neat, it is much more complex and overall much more enjoyable. It is also a very terrific bourbon for the price that it is sold at, typically between the $30 and $40 range.
