Elkins has officially aged their first whisky in barrels, and once again they have put out another product we both very much enjoyed. They have followed their own path in making whisky, instead of going traditional “Bourbon” or “Rye” or “Single Malt” and what they have come up with is a whisky that is truly unique to Colorado. This was a very limited release for their first one, only available at the Distillery.

Color: Coppery amber color, some definite red hues coming through.

Nose: Sweet corn jumps right out of the glass, with the oak complimenting it well. Notes of nuttiness and maple with a bit of cinnamon all entice.

Palate: The whisky immediately coats your entire mouth with a creamy, buttery texture. Sweetness from the corn up front give way into a mid palate that has some spices that go with caramelized marshmallow notes. The entire sip is very layered and complex, giving plenty to enjoy.

Finish: A smooth and lingering finish with some baking spices and oak.

With water added:

Nose: The nose becomes sweeter, reminiscent of creme brûlée with the oak notes still coming through.

Palate: Smooth as silk, the creamy texture still maintains with the water added. The spices open up a bit, and the sweetness fades just a bit.

Finish: Toasted almond and cherry with maybe a hint of tobacco, and still lingers for a while.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Elkins Whisky is just a good product. Now that they have gotten approval to actually barrel age their whisky, we are very excited to see what they will continue to produce.

I agree completely, the folks at Elkins are on the right track. Come to Estes Park on October 26th for a pairing dinner at the Latitude 105 restaurant. Saturday the 27th start at 1:00 for a tour of the Elkins Distillery and then move to Estes Park’s Event Center for the Rocky Mountain Craft Spirit Festival (2-5:00). This will be a great weekend. Hey Howell,
It is an event we would have loved to have done, but unfortunately I will be at work for the duration of that event. We have definitely been telling people about it though, and hope we can make it up for a festival in Estes park soon!
