Time to Shake things up a little (we’ll go even outside the whiskey realm soon) and move to an Irish Whiskey. Today I have a review on the Tyrconnell, which is one that is quite impressive.
Starting off on the nose, this whiskey wafts up with the immediately recognizable scent of malted barely. There is a smell of bananas and cream which took me a bit to place, and there is a bit of alcohol scent that is in the background. Very enticing on the nose.
The first sip instantly coats your whole mouth, making the whiskey feel creamy. The grain is the first flavor that hits your palate, much like the nose got it first as well. Moves into a little bit of banana, cream, and toffee flavors that give it a sweet taste all the way to the finish. Once it is at the finish, it becomes really woody, a burnt wood taste with maybe a touch of caramel, but not sweet at all. There is also just a hint of smoke on the finish, which almost comes out of nowhere but is a great addition.
I added a little bit of water, as is tradition, only to find that it is not a recommended thing to do with Irish Whiskey. It really just dulled the entire experience. If you want to chill the whiskey, then use something that won’t melt, such as the whiskey stones you can freeze.
Overall, I give this an 87/100. It is a terrific Irish Whiskey, and it is a decent price; I have found it for around $37. Definitely worth picking up.
