Lady on the Beach. A Colorado Rum that encapsulates the essence of the Caribbean Spirit.
Rum is an interesting spirit, especially when it comes to being made in Colorado. I personally have enjoyed almost all of them I have tried, but they all are just a little off, just a little different, than the same spirit made in more tropical locales. Rum is a little different from grain spirits, in that it is fermented and then distilled sugar – either Molasses or sugarcane juice – instead of Corn, barley, rye, or wheat. This means that while a distillery like the Snitching Lady strives to be all Colorado from Top to bottom, that is not easy to do when making a rum. There aren’t exactly vast sugarcane fields in the Centennial State.
Snitching Lady imports molasses directly from the Caribbean, then distilled and aged in mountains. Thomas, master distiller of the Snitching Lady, has created a fantastic and very Caribbean style rum, that will transport you right onto the sandy white shores of a Jamaican Beach while still staring at 14,000 foot peak.
In the Bottle:
Mashbill:
Caribbean Molasses
Age:
12 Months
Proof:
100 Proof (50% ABV)
In the Glass:
Color:
Clear with just a very light, pale straw-yellow tinge. Great legs on the glass, but not oily looking.
Without Water:
Nose:
Absolute Butterscotch bomb, it hits right away and doesn’t stop. The alcohol smell comes through a bit, but not overly and it doesn’t take anything away. A light molasses note as well.
Palate:
Sweet vanilla and butterscotch right up front, continuing right from the nose. It is sweet, but not overly so, and has a lot of baking spices on the mid palate, nutmeg and a little bit of cinnamon. A little bit of oily mouthfeel, but very clean.
Finish:
The barrel tannins come through a good amount. There is still plenty of vanilla and butterscotch, and there is just a hint of leather as well. It is long, lingering for quite a while, but again is very clean and crisp.
With Water:
Nose:
Somehow there is even more butterscotch, which I was blown away by since there was a ton before adding any water. There is some vanilla and worn in leather.
Palate:
One of my favorite flavors when cooking or baking is Mexican Vanilla. That vanilla flavor comes through heavily, and it absolutely has that Caribbean vanilla profile. Maybe it’s just in my head. All the way through the mid palate I was thinking how great this would be in a rum old fashioned.
Finish:
More barrel tannins and a bit dryer, but still plenty of the vanilla, butterscotch, and molasses. It definitely shortens a bit with the few drops of water added.
Final Thoughts:
Rum is such a fun spirit. It is usually a little easier drinking in my opinion, than a lot of whiskies. It is versatile, can be used in tons of cocktails, and immediately brings my mind to bright white sandy beaches with crystal clear light blue water.
Clean, crisp, and sweet, the Snitching Lady Lady on the Beach brings wonderful feelings of the ocean up to Mile High – and higher – elevations. I can not recommend this rum enough if you are a rum fan and want something that is made in Colorado. Sitting in the crisp, dry, and clean mountain air sipping on this rum is a combining of two very different worlds in the best way possible. So kick off your shoes, find some sand to sink your toes into, and sip on a Caribbean classic spirit while your 10,000 feet above it.
