Mythology Prism Lizard – 6 Year Bourbon finished in Rum Casks

Mythology Distillery was born on a Ski Trip in Alaska.

It’s a Colorado Company (they do source some of their spirit from other producers out of state), producing some fantastic spirits, even if the idea came from a backcountry ski trip in the wild Alaskan mountains where stories of great adventures on the slopes and great drams of the founders favorite spirits were shared. This love for the fantastical stories, and mythos of the wild created the brand that exists today.

As stated earlier, some of their whiskey is sourced from their own mash bill, and then aged before being bottled by Mythology Spirits. This particular whiskey is one of those, an MGP bourbon with a very unique aging process. After spending 5 years on a barge on the Mississippi River, the bourbon is transferred to a Jamaican Rum Barrel to spend another year aging to it’s finish for a total of 6 years in the wood.

In the Bottle:

Mashbill:

Not Stated – As it is Bourbon, it is at least 51% Corn.

Age:

6 Years;
5 Years in a New Charred American Oak Barrel, that sailed on a Barge on the Mississippi River. Then 1 Year in A Jamaican Rum Cask.

Proof:

94 Proof (47% ABV)

In the Glass:

Color:

Dark, almost copper like a newer penny, and very clear. Left some long legs on the glass as it swirled around.

Without Water:

Nose:

Right away the rum influence is noticeable – molasses and sugary notes up front that are paired with some aromas of pipe or rolled tobacco and leather.

Palate:

Lots of sweet vanilla right up front, kind of floral. It’s very sweet, a creamy brown sugar flavor, and plenty of oak influence. There’s a bit of tannic almost astringent note, which is actually much nicer than it sounds.

Finish:

Very long, and lots of rum influence. Barrel Tannins come through more on the finish, and there’s some nutmeg and baking spices that come through strongly on the finish as well.

With Water:

Nose:

The corn sweetness comes through a lot stronger instead of the molasses. A lot more vanilla and oaky sweetness come through too. The tobacco and leather still are present but not front and center.

Palate:

As if to immediately contradict the nose, the bourbon notes fade a lot leaving more of the rum to come through on the palate. Leather, baking spices and cinnamon, and a little bit of tobacco.

Finish:

A little more tannic than before water, and again the rum comes through a lot more. There’s a little bit of floral or herbal note, and more of the nutmeg and baking spice. Very sweet as well, and lingers a long time.

Final Thoughts:

The finishing of spirits in other casks is a really interesting and fun way to really change a lot a flavors without adding any artificial flavors. Jamaica makes some of the best rum in the world, and to take a great American bourbon and place it into a rum barrel for a year to influence all of the flavors without changing the true nature of the spirit is an impressive feat.

Mythology has taken a great spirit, allowed it to age 5 years on the Mississippi river to create an excellently aged bourbon, then moved that into a rum Barrel from the heart of the Caribbean, adding a depth to it that keeps the initial spirit intact.

Every spirit released from Mythology is labeled with a spirit animal. This release, the Prism Lizard, has printed on the side that it is: Wild. Intrepid. Adaptive. A perfect description for this excellent release.
