The Outlaw Legend is a once a year release that is put out every year around the holidays by Mystic Mountain Distillery. Each year, the release embodies a terrific whiskey for sitting on the couch, a fire burning next the seat, and watching snow fall out the window. The 2022 continues that tradition, becoming the next in a line of legendary releases.
Mashbill:
As this is considered a straight bourbon whiskey, it is a minimum 51% Corn. We don’t have the specific mash details on this bottle at this time.
Age:
3 Years in New American Oak Barrels.
Proof:
96 Proof (48% ABV)
In the Glass:
Color:
Caramel/Brown, this whiskey has a deep color, looking almost like molasses, and leaves legs on the glass.
Without Water:
Nose:
Cinnamon nutmeg and allspice, with some heavy caramel and brown sugar notes, and just a little bit of charred oak.
Palate:
Sweet dark brown sugar and vanilla right up front, lots of sweetness. This becomes a little drier and is full of holiday spices; allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and sugar, with even a little bit of a white pepper/spicy note adding some complexity. It is very full bodied.
Finish:
Charred oak and tannins, with vanilla notes that lingers a long time.
With Water:
Nose:
A lot more Vanilla, a little bit sweeter, and some dried, deep red fruits come out. There are notes of allspice and sweet dark molasses.
Palate:
Softer right up front, but still sweet. Thicker and creamier mouth feel with a little bit of water added. There are also more of the spices on the mid palate, making it a bit drier.
Finish:
Still quite lengthy, but much more less tannic and more full of molasses. The oak is still present.
Final Thoughts:
This bottle continues the tradition of special releases every year from the terrific folks at Mystic Mountain. It is a perfect pour for the end of a long day, when the temps have dropped below freezing and the couch calls for you after snacking on some summer sausage, cheese and crackers, and it’s time to have a night cap after a glass of wine.
