Every year, the folks at Mystic Mountain Distillery produce their Outlaw Legend Straight Bourbon. This limited Holiday release is a terrific whiskey to pour a dram and sit next to a crackling fire as the snow falls outside, or to mix into egg nog or any other delicious holiday cocktail.
Color: Very dark, in the bottle in it is almost like coffee. There is a slight copper tinge to it in the glass.
Nose: It is very sweet right off the bat, with some allspice, caramel or toffee and nutmeg. There is also a straw/earthy note that comes through as well.
Palate: There is some cinnamon right off the front, almost like a red hot candy. A lot of sweetness, butterscotch, toffee and allspice. Some heavy oak as well, with black pepper notes. Lots of layers in this sip. It has a thicker mouth feel but isn’t overly coating.
Finish: A good amount of spice, really balancing out the sweetness of the palate. Cinnamon and nutmeg. It lingers for a little while, but doesn’t burn.
With Water:
Nose: Lots of spicy cinnamon, tree bark, hints of molasses and vanilla.
Palate: A lot more spices come out with the water, the sweetness maintains though. There is cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Some flavor reminiscent of Biscoff Cookies. It is thicker with the water, coating the mouth even more. The water really makes this taste like the holiday season.
Finish: Lingers even longer than before, and is silky as it goes down.

This bourbon really shines as a holiday dram, pour over an ice cube and enjoy as you warm up by a fire as the snow falls outside. It also would be excellent in eggnog, or could make a hot toddy, or a cinnamon maple whiskey sour. You can find that recipe here.
