We finished 2017 with a taste of the Mystic Mountain Distilleries Outlaw Legend, and are starting off 2018 with a review of the bottle. This was a unique bourbon that we both enjoyed.

Color: A very dark pour of coffee or dark copper. Leaves great trails on the glass.

Nose: Immediately jumping out of the glass are notes of chocolate, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and other holiday spices. It is a little malty and has some scents of vanilla, caramel and banana bread. Right away, it brings up baked goods coming out of the oven during a holiday family get together.

Palate: The mouth feel on this bourbon is thick and creamy, making it easy to sip and enjoy the flavors of chocolate, spices, and nuts. Some notes of dark fruits come through and compliment some oak and vanilla flavors. It is not an extremely layered sip, but does give you lots of flavors in succession of one another that all go terrifically well together. Not an overly sweet sip either, but is definitely reminiscent of baked holiday goods (read tarts, pies, and dark baking chocolate).

Finish: After the creamy mouth feel, the bourbon lingers for a while on the finish with a smooth exit. You can tell there is a little bit of heat, but it is not a hot bourbon at all.

With Water:

Nose: The holiday spices really become apparent with a drop of distilled water. Allspice, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon and just a hint of leather all come through.

Palate: A little less thick and creamy of a mouth feel, but the dark fruits really come forward more, which compliment the rest of the flavors excellently.

Finish: A bit shorter on the finish with the water added, but still lingers long enough to let you know to have some more.

If you have ever had Russian Tea Cakes, this particular bourbon would go great with them.

This is a terrific holiday sipper, perfect to enjoy on a snowy afternoon when you just have nothing left to do but sit next to a fire and watch the snow fall outside.
