High West Distillery out of Utah is a well known, and typically highly regarded distillery in the whiskey world. Today we have their Double Rye! whiskey. Why is it called Double? It is a double rye because it is a blend of two different rye whiskeys that make up this particular bottle.

Color: Light copper, very clear.

Nose: Rye Spice, oak notes, and hints of coriander come off the nose, with the lightest amount of sweet caramel or molasses.

Palate: Right up front, this shows that is not the same as a lot of ryes, as the front of the palate is sweet and smooth, right into the spicy rye notes on the mid palate. There isn’t a lot of burn however, it is remarkably smooth.

Finish: The rye spice notes stick around for a while on a smooth finish that lingers.

With Water:

Nose: Rye notes again are the predominant smell here, with some sweet baked bread, black pepper, nutmeg and molasses coming through. A couple drops of water and this nose opened up entirely.

Palate: (Split into 2 since we did not fully agree)
Angela: Not as strong as I was expecting, not as much spice on the palate. The rye really comes through a lot once the water is added, but there just is not as much of that rye spice.
Zach:  The rye comes through huge on the mid palate, creating a spicy, enjoyable sip that does not burn which allows the flavors of the rye to really be enjoyed.

Finish: Smooth, smooth finish, with buttery notes that go with the rye bread flavors really well.

Ratings:
Angela: 85/100
Zach: 90/100
Overall: 87.5/100

Final Notes: Definitely a great bottle, priced at around $35-$40, making this one that you should definitely pick up.
