Elkin’s continues to put out quality whisky, and with a couple changes to their main whisky recipe, we had to try it for ourselves! Here is our update on the newest release of the Elkin’s Whisky
Mash bill: 80% Corn, 12% Rye, 8% Malted Barley (All grains 100% Colorado Grown)
Age: No age statement, aged with a blend of predominately toasted French Oak and toasted American white oak.
100 Proof (50% Alcohol by Volume)
Color: A dark, golden honey hue.
Nose: Lots of sweet corn, lots of wood, and notes of barley, cocoa, some faint spices, caramel and coconut are all apparent on the nose. The French oak really stands out, making a unique nose, especially compared to the previous Elkin’s release.
Palate: Soft right off the front, but the mid palate opens up with a silky smooth and creamy mouth feel that is extremely flavorful. Notes of vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and toasted oak. The blend of malted barley and rye really balance out the sweet corn, and the oak really ads layers. It is a very creamy mouth feel, silky smooth and coating the entire mouth.
With Water:
Nose: Coconut makes a bit more of an appearance, but the nose stays mostly the same.
Palate: A little bit more of the spicy notes on the back end of the sip, it seems like the rye comes through a bit more. Still a good sip, but this particular whisky needs to be enjoyed straight up, we both agree it is much better before the water.
Finish: A semi-lingering finish, hangs around for long enough to really let you enjoy the sip just a bit longer. The barley oak really come through on the finish.
Final thoughts:
Elkin’s really nailed it once again with this Whisky. The French oak really adds a layer of uniqueness that we both very much enjoy. Sitting on shelves at around $30, this is one to definitely pick up!
