Breckenridge Port Cask Whiskey

Breckenridge Distillery made one of our favorite bourbons that we have come across so far. The next review we have of their whiskey is the Port Cask Finished Whiskey, a high rye bourbon mash that is aged a minimum of 3 years and finished in port wine casks.

Breckenridge Port Cask Whiskey

Color:
In the glass, the whiskey pours a dark amber color, darker than the regular bourbon from the time in the port casks.

Nose:
The nose on this is very sweet, the port wine comes through heavily, but some creamy vanilla and caramel from the bourbon is still the main part of the nose. There is some oak on the nose, but the oak takes a back seat to the sweet bourbon and port notes. Even though it is a high rye mash, the typical rye smells did not really come through the other smells.

Palate:
The palate starts off with a sweet front, very thick and rich, coating your whole mouth as it moves onto the mid palate. The mid palate has some of that rye spiciness that you would expect from a high rye mash. The finish moves back to some sweetness and the port flavor comes through, and the rye spice lingers into the finish. The finish stays around for a while, a really nice reminder after the sip is gone.

After water was added, the nose becomes more oaky and vanilla notes come through. The port wine is a little more apparent, and some cocoa notes come through as well.

The palate became a little sweeter, and the cocoa notes that appeared on the nose come through on the beginning. The rye spice still comes through on the mid palate and stays through the finish, but it is a little  bit more mellow. The finish is full of port and is very sweet, still lingering around for a long time.

Angela Rated this an 89/100
Zach rated it a 90/100
Overall a 90/100

Even though Zach rated it a point higher, Angela is the one who could sip this all day as it is very easy and smooth. It was a little too rich for an all day drinker, but is perfect to enjoy after dinner as a dessert.
