Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon

Out of the Buffalo Trace distillery comes the Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon, holding the claim of the Original Single Barrel Bourbon. This particular bottle was from Barrel 1039, aged in warehouse H on Rick number 55. Every bottle of Blanton’s Bourbon is hand bottled and labelled with the information on it. A couple weeks ago we talked about our experience at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, and now we have a review on a bottle from that distillery.

Before we jump in, we would like to thank our good friends from the Cinema Squares Podcast over at WharfWorks.com. Cinema Squares is a weekly movie review podcast, with 4 of them talking about new movies every other week, and a movie related topic on the non-review pick weeks. Check out their podcast, and let them know we sent you. Now let’s get into the review!

Blanton's Single Barrel

Color:
In the glass this bourbon is a very clear golden, brass, or ever copper color. The clear comes from the fact that the Blanton’s is cold filtered, removing any oils or anything else to make the whiskey more cloudy.

Nose:
The nose is extremely inviting, sweet oak, honey, vanilla, and citrus/orange peel notes. The smell brought us back to the bottling room at Buffalo Trace while we were on the tour.

Palate:
Right up front, this is a very bright whiskey, full of those orange and citrus notes that you get off the nose. The mid palate has vanilla and oak flavors, and is full of the sweeter notes. Then the bourbon almost entirely disappear, there are some faint clove notes, but the finish is so short you almost miss it. That is definitely the downfall of the whiskey, makes it seem as if the whiskey is missing a huge piece.

Nose with Water:
The nose is very similar after adding water to it, the honey and vanilla notes come out a little bit more, otherwise the other smells are still present.

Palate with Water:
A much sweeter citrus flavor starts off the palate after water is added, moving into the sweet vanilla and honey notes on the mid palate. The finish still is short, the clove hints are there briefly, but overall the whiskey disappears very quickly.

Ratings:
Angela:87/100
Zach:85/100
Overall: 86/100

This could easily have been a over 90 point bottle if the finish was there. With many notes that make the bourbon quite enjoyable, and claiming that it is the original single barrel bourbon, it is worth picking up.

Once more, a huge thanks to the guys from the Cinema Squares podcast for providing us with this bottle to bring you another review!
