Back to the Mystic Mountain Distillery out of Larkspur, we have a new release of the Outlaw Legend, a limited holiday release. Cask #5 consisted of 24 bottles, and we were extremely excited and grateful to get one of them.
Color: A golden and red copper color and clear
Nose: Vanilla and caramel both come out on the nose right away, with some sweet notes of corn and molasses. There are also notes of cranberry, and rich bread or bakery hints. The nose does have a bit of heat to it, but overall very inviting.
Palate: Sweet and soft right up front, but quickly moves into a creamy and thick mouth feel on the mid palate. Notes of cherry and other dark fruit, with some earthy and straw notes as well, really jump out. There are also some spices, cinnamon and a bit of tart, dried cranberry.
Finish: The finish lingers for a while with dry, earthy notes accompanied by oak and more dried cranberry. It is fantastically smooth, almost not alcohol burn at all.
With Water:
Nose: The fruits jump out much heavier immediately, cherry, cranberry, and other dark fruits with almost a perfume quality to it. (Not in an overbearing type of way though. It’s pleasant) There are still some straw and earthy notes as well. The nose is sweet and candied, and it really grows with a couple drops of water.
Palate: Still very sweet, like a leathery fruit, with complimentary notes of oak. The creamy texture fades a little bit, but the dark red fruits are still present.
Finish: Oak really comes through on the finish, and a light molasses also is present. The dried fruit remains to compliment the molasses. It is still very smooth, and lingers for about as long as it did without the water.
Ratings:
Angela: 94
Zach: 91
Overall: 92.5/100
This bottle is really excellent, smooth and easy drinking but layered enough to have some complex notes. Zach remarked that it was a late fall/early winter type of bourbon, perfect for the Holidays. Angela said it reminded her more of the very end of summer through fall, her favorite time of year. Either way, Mystic Mountain really did an excellent job with this years Outlaw Legend.
