Mystic Mountain’s Hero Whiskey Batch 1
Pat Smith is the inspiration behind Hero Whiskey Batch 1, a Vietnam vet and long time advocate for fellow service members. After a devastating storm destroyed his home, his community came together to support him, and that along with the Vet’s resilience inspired the first release of Hero Whiskey.
Every bottle of Hero Whiskey supports life improving initiatives for Veterans and their families, partnering with Earth Saving Solutions and Summit and Shore Alliance. Learn more about the whiskey and the initiatives at their site below.
Hero Whiskey
In the Bottle:
Mashbill:
80% Corn
15% Rye
5% Wheat
Age:
3 to 4 Years
Proof:
101 Proof (50.5% ABV)
In the Glass:
Appearance:
Nice and oily legs on the glass really stood out to me right away. It is bronze and remarkably clear considering the oily legs.
Without Water:
Nose:
Baked goods with some subtle spices, and plenty of sweet brown sugar and Butterscotch.
Palate:
Sweet and spicy, marrying the two flavors right away on the front of the palate. Light to medium bodied, with a much more rye and spiced mid palate with some nice depth of vanilla, caramel and light smoke.
Finish:
Medium length finish full of Dark, nutty flavors and has a nice spicy, peppery quality.
With Water:
Nose:
The baked goods and bread come through stronger with a few drops of water. Candied Rye and spices are very prevalent.
Palate:
The water makes the body lighter, and the front of the palate comes in with more butterscotch and sweet notes. The mid palate is full of more spices and even a light herbal note.
Finish:
Shortens, but the oaky vanilla and tannins come through, although the tannins are more rounded instead of sharp. It has about the same length with water added.
Final Thoughts:
Speaking to Jonathon with Mystic Mountain, this is their first real foray into a rye heavy whiskey. This was a very enjoyable first try, marrying plenty of the rye spices with the depth I have come to expect from Mystic Mountain.
I am always in favor of something that gives back as well – so this is an especially cool bottle for me to be able to review. They will be donating part of the proceeds from every bottle to charities supporting veterans, so be sure to check it out and know you are getting a great whiskey for a great cause.
