What comes to mind you think Breckenridge? Mountains. Skiing. Hiking. When people think of Colorado, the Breck area would be extremely close to the image that comes to mind. It is absolutely gorgeous, and tucked up in the town is a distillery that has made itself well known through the whiskey world. Winning multiple awards over the years (including one at the World Whiskies Awards for their Powder Hound Batch 9 in ’22), and constantly bringing some attention to the Colorado Whiskey scene, Breckenridge Distillery is a fantastic location producing some terrific whiskies.
Powder Hound from Breckenridge is a special blend that is only Available in Colorado, and some money from every bottle sold is donated to the Frisco Animal Shelter near to Breck. Here we have batch number 7 purchased up at the distillery towards the end of 2021.
In the Bottle:
Mashbill:
A blended whiskey with a Mash bill that is undisclosed.
Age:
No Age statement
Proof:
90 Proof (45% ABV)
In the Glass:
Color:
Clean golden bronze, some oil on the glass. Definitely looks to be chill filtered.
Without Water:
Nose:
Sweet ripe berries such as black cherry, vanilla, and brown sugar. Dark, and almost creamy.
Palate:
Molasses right up front, instantly giving a thick and creamy mouthfeel that sticks through the mid palate which is full of dark fruits and toasted marshmallow. Angie got some chocolate notes she pointed out, which after I picked up too, making it almost s’mores-esque.
Finish:
A long and oily finish, sticks around a long time with flavors of burnt sugar/burnt marshmallow and vanilla with some bitter tannic notes.
With Water:
Nose:
Fresh black cherry pie, right out of the oven. It even smells like it was oven warmed, sugary, and extremely inviting. Hobo-lifting pie smells.
Palate:
A bit softer, not quite as molasses forward but still logs of creamy sweet notes. The burnt sugar notes fade a little, less of the burnt marshmallow and more of a melted marshmallow. Complimented by the dark fruit notes all the way through.
Finish:
Loses that tannic bite, possibly making it a little more appealing to people who don’t like bitter tannic notes. Finishes very much like a black cherry pie with melted marshmallows and burnt sugar. The oily part of the finish isn’t quite as present, but it does stick around for a while even with some water drops added.
Final Thoughts:
Breckenridge nailed it with a bottle that is both delicious and gives back to the animal community. With money from every bottle sold going to the Frisco Animal shelter, it’s a win-win to pick up a bottle of this whiskey.
The Powder Hound also recently won Best American Blended for the 2022 World Whiskies Awards for Batch 9.
