After a hiatus (moving sucks), we are officially back! Our newest review is a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel aged Belgian Quadruple from Funkwerk’s brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado. To make it a little more unique, the barrel is a single barrel selected for Total Beverage, so not only a single barrel of beer, but aged in a single barrel selected specifically for the store. Definitely a cool project, and we were excited to review it! So let’s jump in!
Let’s start off with the color. A dark burnt caramel, some gold to it, and a very lightly blonde head. Very enticing pour. Moving onto the nose, jumping right out are dark berry notes, plum and even a touch of dark cherry. There is a very noticeable bourbon smell, with notes of vanilla, oak, and sweetness.
Onto the palate, the sip is a lot lighter than the color and nose would suggest. The beer gives lots of flavors of dark fruit, plums, dark cherry, and toffee. The bourbon barrel comes through with notes of vanilla, brown sugar, and oak. There is a hint of spice that comes through as well on the sip, and the finish has a slight tart flavor to it.
Starting off with this chilled all the way, the flavors really start to open up as it warms up a little bit, as most barrel aged beers do. The bottle recommends 50 degrees F as a serving temperature, and we agree.
Onto the ratings!
Zach gave this a 94/100
Angie gave this a 89/100
Overall, the Funkwerk’s Total Barrel earns a 92 out of 100. Delicious beer, and we definitely recommend getting one before they are gone!
