Rye whiskey is a delicious style of whiskey, in fact one of our favorites here at Mile High Bourbon & Rye, and today we have a review on what is a very enjoyable bottle; Michter’s Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey.
Coming recommend to us by some good friends, let’s jump right into it.
The nose on this whiskey is full of rye spice notes, which is very enticing for people who enjoy this style. There are some sweet caramel notes, and a bit of cinnamon and oak. One we could sniff all day.
The sip on the Michter’s hits up front with that caramel and sweetness on the tip of the tongue, which fades into the spicy rye flavors, which appear almost immediately following that initial sweetness. There is a light corn sweetness that is present throughout the entire sip as well, but it takes a more behind the scenes role, accentuating the flavors of spice, but keeping it light, making it a very approachable and drinkable whiskey.
The finish on this has some nice oak flavors, some vanilla comes through, and is quite enjoyable, albeit a little short.
With a couple drops of water in the glass, the caramel on the nose seems to explode out, becoming much more prevalent. The sip has more sweetness throughout as well, the caramel and vanilla notes becoming more obvious. The spicy rye is still the main flavor however, making the much more complex than before adding the water. The finish becomes a little bit shorter, but is still very enjoyable.
Ratings on this bottle:
Angie: 89/100
Zach: 87/100
Overall: 88/100. A delicious bottle that shows just how much can be done with a mainly rye mash bill.
