Deerhammer out of Buena Vista has started a new project they are calling the progeny series. The first release of this series is with Cultura Craft Chocolate, a “bean to bar” chocolate company out of Denver Colorado. This collaboration grabbed out attention as a completely local and really delicious sounding treat. This Insanely Limited Release, as Deerhammer states it, is the first of what promises to be an exciting series of whiskies.

Color: While certainly darker, it is not quite as dark as we expected in the glass. Definitely a bit darker than the Deerhammer single malt.

Nose: As would be expected, lots of Chocolate, met with earthy notes of straw and hints of vanilla.

Palate: Sweet and a bit softer, but thick and coating. Dark chocolate notes that has a bit of bitterness to it. It is There is some vanilla and malt notes as well.

Finish: Lingering and rich, with a bit of raisin notes.

With Water:

Nose: The earthy straw notes fade a bit to the chocolate and vanilla. A little bit sweeter overall on the nose.

Palate: The sweetness fades on the front a bit, but lots of roasted malty notes and tons of chocolate come out. A lot less bitterness, but still coating and thick.

Finish: Angie thought the finish extended with a couple drops of water, Zach thought it shortened significantly instead. We both agreed that it was a bit sweeter and rich, with some dried fruit/raisin notes.

This is an excellent collaboration and extremely fun whiskey. As Deerhammer continues to put out quality products, we will continue to look forward to more releases of their progeny series.
