10th Mountain Single Barrel MHBR & Paw Prints Pet Rescue Pick

Sometimes, a whiskey just means more.

This is a project that I am beyond excited to be able to be sharing with you all. As of the time of writing this, MHBR is coming up on it’s 10th anniversary in just a few months, and picking a single barrel was something I had wanted to do since day one. When Paw Prints Pet Rescue said they would love to partner with me and pick a barrel, and 10th Mountain Distillery had the barrels available to pick from, I knew this was finally the time to move forward with this selection.

Whiskey for Whiskers

This bottle is not only one of my favorite whiskies I’ve had the privilege to taste, but it also is supporting a fantastic cause. Paw Prints Pet Rescue is a shelter for pets who may otherwise not have a home. While they are currently still small, they are already making an impact with pets, and have some available for adoption today. Donations and help from projects like this will allow them to continue to grow and house even more pets, making even more of an impact and saving more of our furry friends. If you want one of these bottles as our gift to you, donate $100 to the fundraising campaign and we will ensure you get one!

In the Bottle:

Mashbill:

75% Corn, 21% Rye, 4% Malted Barley

Age:

2 Years, 3 Months

Proof:

120.8 Proof (60.4% ABV)

In the Glass:

Appearance:

Dark bronze or even amber, remarkably clear and leaves nice oily legs on the glass when swirled a little.

Without Water:

Nose:

Brown Sugar, toasted marshmallow, and caramel all jump out, but there is some baking spices and cinnamon, and also a little bit of honey that makes this extremely inviting.

Palate:

It does not show it’s proof on the front or mid palate, with a soft sweetness of brown sugar and vanilla right up front that moves into a pepper, spicy, and complex mid palate. A nice and full, thick, mouthfeel really allows for this to be savored.

Finish:

Long and tannic, it shows a little bit of the heat at the finish, especially with a warming sensation in the chest, but is not in any way offputting. There are some leather and tobacco notes that hang around for a while along with the other sweet and spice flavors.

With Water:

Nose:

Immediately becomes a butterscotch bomb with just a couple drops of water added, really changing the nose relatively significantly. There are still some brown sugar notes too, and some of the spices come out a little more, with even some more peppery notes that become apparent.

Palate:

That butterscotch follows from the nose through to the front of the palate strongly, again really adding a note that I did not notice at all without any water added. Still a very full bodied mouthfeel, with lots of complex spice and sweet notes all playing in tandem with one another.

Finish:

Stays just as long, though maybe a little bit more of the tannins and leather are noticeable. There is also more cinnamon, but think cinnamon candy instead of pure cinnamon sticks – it’s spicy but sweet. It does not have near as much of the heat, and it is still very clean and approachable. It really opens up a ton with just a little water added.

Final Thoughts:

What a spectacular barrel that we managed to secure from 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirit Co! This release truly showcases some of Colorado’s finest. At only just over 2 years old, this drinks like a much more complex bourbon that I would typically think of at 2 years. I was blown away at this particular release from 10th Mountain, and am thrilled that this is the barrel we managed to secure to help raise money for a terrific charity!
